Thread Tools Show Printable Version. Post Processor Editing Class Hello, In my work, we have a machinist that creaes his programs in mastercam 10 and transfers them to our cnc machines a mori seiki with a fanuc controller and an old fadall the problem is that sometimes mastercam cretes a program and uses a G code that migt not be used by the old machine. He was telling me that when this happens, one of the ways to fix is to edit the post processor to change codes. The question is, can you guys recommend a class that will go through editing post-processors so that the machinist can change the program to what he likes?

Any help appreciated!

In general terms, each CAM system handles post editing differently. For example, Featurecam has an editor called XBuild - very easy to make changes. Mastercam is a bit more difficult to deal with than the above mentioned. However, if you wanted to get into it, guidelines to editing Mastercam posts are available. Don't have the reference here at work at the moment, but someone else here will likely be able to provide that reference or link will look tonight if it isn't posted today.

Given Mastercam's distribution system, they like to reserve post editing for their VARs, but it can be an expensive proposition depending on the changes you want made. However, can't hurt to ask and might be worth it to you. My issue is now twenty years old; it was a couple years out of date when I bought it from MasterCAM, but was current for the posts then in use.

It was useful for allowing me to modify their generic Fanuc post for the Centroid mill control I run. I have tweaked my post to the point where I never hand edit a program. I would suggest if you are current with your maintenance or whatever is required these days, to contact CNC Software directly and see if they have a current edition for sale.

If not, look for a copy used on E-bay or whatever. The syntax of the posts may not have changed all that much. A bit of advice; back-up your existing post, and save any modified version with a new name. When modifying a post, "REM" out the line you are changing and add a new line with a remark stating that it is a new line, date, and intended purpose.Extend the travel of your rotary axis by automatically winding the axis backwards before the cut, avoiding unnecessary retracts, turn-arounds and approaches.

Automatically eliminate head and table wobbling when moving along low-angle, near- singular compound curves. For example a CNC post-processor may summarize axes travels, feed and speed limits, job run-time and tool usage information, which enables better selection and scheduling of resources. More sophisticated CNC post-processors may validate the program before it is run by the machine tool.

There are many simple rules that a CNC post can follow, with warning messages displayed when these rules are violated. Some examples: Noting if a tool is not selected near the start of the program, warning when motions at feed rate are done with a stopped spindle, flagging long series of positioning moves, or conversely, flagging feed moves at or above the program clearance plane, or noting if diameter or length compensation switches are not changed when a tool is.

Beyond simple validation comes correction.

There are many situations where a CNC post-processor can detect an error and correct it. Examples include: cycles left active during a tool change they should be temporarily cancelledselecting an incorrect or nonexistent spindle gear range the post-processor should select a range that supports the speedor specifying an unavailable coolant type the CNC post should select the next best type.

The best CNC post-processors maintain a global picture of the entire job at all times, using upcoming events to help make decisions about current ones.

CAM Post Processors for G-Code Dialects

The NC programmer uses this information to optimize the job without intervention. For example: pre-selecting the next tool as soon as physically possible, segmenting a tape at a tool change if the entire upcoming tool path will not fit on the current reel, selecting a spindle gear that best fits the current and subsequent speed requirements, or switching intelligently between parallel axes Z and W based on the types of upcoming operations and available travel limits.

It is generally far easier to change the CNC post than it is to get a new revision of the CAM system, or a new executive revision for the NC controller. The important point to be made here is that the NC programmer should not be concerned about machine tool or machine operator idiosyncrasies that do not directly affect the production of a job. Wherever possible, good CNC post-processors should hide these details within.

There are too many variables in the real world, and standards are too restricted in scope, to achieve integration with off-the-shelf components. Stop reworking positioning motions in your CAM with a post that automatically adapts those motions to new machines for you.

However, these paths are not yet specific to your CNC machine. See, not so hard to understand how it works now, is it? The final accuracy of your cut and optimal use of your CNC machine depends on your post processor software.

Without it, or with poor software, you can end up with longer cycle times, damaged parts, ruined equipment, and injuries to employees. That all translates to wasted time and money at your business too.

That can also mean lower part quality. And that can lead to angry customers who take their business elsewhere. And you should take extra caution to follow this guideline if you have complex machining needs.

You might use it for probing, custom drill patterns, setting familiar patterns, right angle heads, tracking tool life, documenting your G-Code to add clarity for operators, or to set variable setup options.

A software engineer from CNC Software, makers of Mastercam programming software, explains the different types of CNC post processors, the different types of post processor users and the different levels of functionality in post processors. To write a post processor, begin by locating a generic post or a post from a similar machine that you can modify. This is typically easier than writing a post from scratch.

It is important to create a set of reference parts for consistent and repeatable testing. When the post is done, archive all files and parts used for development. This will make it easier to maintain the post in the future as your CAM software is upgraded. A dedicated post processor editor color-codes different types of NC words to make your program easier to read.

Multiple code streams can be displayed side-by-side. In their shadow, however, is an equally important piece of software. It is the bridge between computer-generated tool paths and the CNC equipment. Understanding those things can help your shop become more capable and productive. Say you are going to manufacture a part on a mill, lathe or multi-axis machining center.

For example, your control will expect information such as work offsets, tool offsets and canned cycles to be formatted and presented in a specific way. Examples of machine shop-specific customization might include your standards for safety blocks or required comments. The post can also generate additional outputs such as alarms or signals to equipment performing secondary operations. Some posts can be programmed to deliver functionality beyond what is currently available in your CAD system.

Closed post processors allow no one but authorized parties that is, the post vendor to customize the post. The benefit of the closed approach lies in its simplicity and safety. If not, the vendor will create customizations for a fee. Open post processors give their users more options to make this software fit their preferences and requirements.

Today, there is a large community of experts who know how to develop post customizations, and they share their knowledge with each other. Open post processors provide their own layer of safety, too.
